Detecting Oestrus by Monitoring Sows’ Visits to a Boar

چکیده
This paper suggests a method for automatic detection of sows returning to 1 oestrus in the gestation department. The detection is based on monitoring of 2 sows’ visits to a boar, where the duration and frequency of visits are modelled 3 separately and subsequently combined. The hypothesis is that it is possible 4 to reduce the response time and the number of false alarms compared to 5 previously published attempts. The duration of visits to a boar is defined 6 as seconds per hour the sow is near the boar – logarithmically transformed. 7 The duration is modelled with a multiprocess dynamic linear model with 8 first order Markov probabilities. The indicator of oestrus is the probability 9 of the model describing oestrus, P (MOE), and it is monitored with a thresh10 old value. The frequency of visits to a boar is defined as number of visits 11 per 6 hours. A dynamic generalised linear model with two built-in diurnal 12 periods is applied. The indicator of oestrus is the relative deviation from the 13 ∗Corresponding author: email: [email protected] Email addresses: [email protected] (T. Ostersen), [email protected] (C. Effects of boar stimuli on the follicular phase and on oestrous behaviour in sows.
This review describes the role of boar stimuli in receptive behaviour, and the influence of boar stimuli during the follicular phase. Receptive behaviour (standing response) in an oestrous sow is elicited by boar stimuli, which can be olfactory, auditory, tactile, or visual. The relative importance of these stimuli is not clear. Individually, olfactory and tactile stimuli elicit a standing resp...
متن کاملEffect of Boar Presence on the Reproductive Performance of Sows
The success and efficiency of pig farming mainly depends on the reproductive performance of pigs. An experiment was conducted to study the effect of presence of the boar on the reproductive performance of sows, the feasibility and economics of rearing pigs of either sex together. Sixteen weaned Large White Yorkshire gilts, twelve weaned sows and two boars were randomly assigned to five groups a...
متن کاملAutomatic detection of oestrus and health disorders using data from electronic sow feeders
This article suggests a method for detecting oestrus, lameness and other health disorders for group housed sows fed by electronic sow feeders (ESF). The detection method is based on the measure of the individual eating rank, modeled using a univariate Dynamic Linear Model. Differences between the predicted values of the model and the observations are monitored using a control chart: a V-mask is...
متن کاملFertilization Rate and Number of Embryos on Day 2 after Intrauterine and Deep Intrauterine Insemination Using Frozen-Thawed Boar Semen in Multiparous Sows
The present study determines fertilization rate and number of embryos on Day 2 after intrauterine insemination (IUI) and deep intrauterine insemination (DIUI) using frozen-thawed (FT) boar semen in multiparous sows. Twelve crossbred Landrace × Yorkshire multiparous sows were included. The sows were inseminated at 24 h after oestrus detection and reinseminated every 12 h until ovulation took pla...

Wongtawan, T. 2004. Fertility after deep intra-uterine AI of concentrated low-volume boar semen doses. Master’s thesis. ISSN 1403-2201, Report no. 49. Boar semen can be successfully frozen -highly packedin small containers (medium-straw, MS or multiple FlatPack, MFP). The use of deep intrauterine artificial insemination (DIUAI) can make possible the deposition of small volumes of this thawed, n...
